According to the East Flanders prosecutor’s office, the driver had parked his van this morning with the engine running to deliver a package. It is possible that the car was not on the handbrake and/or still in gear.
Not under the influence
The van then started moving and rolled down the sloping street. There were a 68-year-old woman and a 59-year-old roofer who was working with her. They died almost immediately.
The 32-year-old courier ran after the van to stop it, but without success. The police took a breath and saliva test from him. It turned out that he was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The accident is being investigated and in anticipation of this, the driver’s license has been withdrawn for fifteen days.
