Park Sang-won — Wikipedia

Park Sang-won (in Korean: 박상원; born September 14, 2000 in Daejeon), is a South Korean fencer specializing in sabre.

Park Sang-won was born and raised in Daejeon, just like his teammate Oh Sang-uk. He attended Maebong Middle School and Songchon High School, both in the city, before enrolling at Korea National Sport University.[2]. He began fencing by following his older brother’s example. He trained throughout his schooling in his establishments, and particularly at the Korea Sports University.[3]. In particular, he finished second in the President’s Cup, a Korean national competition, in the “middle and high school” category in 2015.[4]. After his graduation (Physical Education Bachelor’s degree in 2023), he joined his city’s club, Daejeon City Hall.[5],[6].

In the senior category, Park Sang-won continues to reach the podiums of the national championships. With the team of the National Sport University of Korea, he was crowned vice champion of South Korea in team in 2020[7]The following year, he took part in his first international competition, the 2021 Summer Universiade. In the final, he defeated Gergo Horvath (15-12), which allowed him to win his first medal in a competition of this magnitude, which was gold.[8].

He then took part in the 2022 Algiers World Cup, his first world competition in the senior category. He then ranked 76th.[9]. At the same time, he continued to participate in junior events, such as the U-23 Asian Championships. In that same year 2022, he was crowned double Asian champion, both individually and in teams.[10].

It was at this time that he joined the South Korean national team in various stages of the World Cup (2022-2023 season). However, his participation in the Olympic Games is not assured. To select the athletes sent to the Olympics, the Korean federation takes into account the results of four competitions organized in 2023: the national championships, a dedicated competition, the President’s Cup and the Kim Chang-hwan Cup.[11]He won the qualifying round, notably by defeating Ha Han-sol in the final.[11]as well as the President’s Cup, this time by beating Oh Sang-uk in the final. He also won the team competition of this cup.[12],[13]. He lost in the semi-finals of the national championships.[14].

Park eventually managed to join the national team, where he was the youngest. The goal was for the Korean delegation to win a third team title in a row.[15]The team, completed by Oh Sang-uk, Gu Bon-gil and Do Gyeong-dong, qualified for the final after a victory against France (45-39)[16]the team engages in a confrontation with the Hungarians. He is the first shooter to enter the arena and the team ends up winning, thus securing the Olympic title.[17],[5]In the individual events, he beat the American Colin Heathcock (15-10), then 5th in the world rankings, despite a match that started badly with a deficit of four touches.[18]His journey ended in the next assault, in the round of 16, against the Chinese Shen Tianfeng (11-15)[19]He finished his Games in 15th position.[20].
