As the position of president became vacant after the impeachment of former President Lim, the Korean Medical Association’s representative council decided to convert the Korean Medical Association to a non-representative system until a new president is elected through an election in early January next year.
Accordingly, a vote was held to elect the emergency committee chairperson among candidates Park Hyeong-wook, Lee Dong-wook, Joo Joo-gu, and Hwang Gyu-seok (in alphabetical order), and candidate Park Hyeong-wook was selected on this day.
According to the Korean Medical Association, in today’s emergency chairperson election, 244 regular members of the National Assembly became the electors. 233 people participated in the first round of voting held until 8 o’clock on the 13th, and candidate Park Hyung-wook was confirmed to be elected with the support of more than half of the 123 people (52.8%). President-elect Park Hyeong-wook, who was selected as emergency committee chairperson on this day, is the only former professor among the four candidates running for emergency committee chairperson. He currently serves as a professor in the Department of Humanities and Social Medicine at Dankook University School of Medicine and serves as vice president of the Korean Medical Association. Meanwhile, President-elect Park, who was elected as emergency committee chairman on this day, attracted public attention as he received public support from the emergency response committee chairman of the Korean Medical Resident Association, Park Dan, who is a representative figure of medical residents.
The chairman of the emergency committee of the Park Dan Resident Council expressed his support for President-elect Park Hyeong-wook, saying, “We believe that he is maintaining the middle ground in many ways without political greed,” and “We expect that smooth communication with young doctors will be possible based on trust.” It was also added that 72 representatives of teaching hospital residents agreed.
Therefore, after receiving the certificate of election, President-elect Park Hyeong-wook said, “Rather than being happy, winning comes to me as a heavy sense of responsibility,” and spoke about forming a non-commissioned committee that would include residents and medical students.
On this day, he added, “The composition and operation of the emergency committee will be confirmed through coordination with the representative council steering committee. However, if there are too many members, it may become a formal meeting, so we plan to operate it concisely.”
And the president-elect said to the government, “If (the government) really wants dialogue, it must stop the time bomb of medical collapse. Only then can true dialogue be possible. The person who can improve policies so that medical residents can return to work is President Yoon Seok-yeol. “If the president does not change, the problem will not be solved no matter how much rhetoric is used,” he emphasized.
