Park Hye-jeong (Goyang City Hall) of the Korean women’s weightlifting team won a gold medal by lifting 125kg in snatch, 169kg in clean and jerk, and a total of 294kg in the Asian Games weightlifting over 87kg group A competition held at Hangzhou Xiaoshan Sports Center on October 7.
‘Jang Mi-ran Kids’ Park Hye-jeong won the Asian Games weightlifting over 87kg category, becoming the women’s heavyweight champion for the first time in 13 years since Jang Mi-ran, who won the gold medal at the 2010 Guangzhou Games (the heaviest weight class at the time was +75kg).
Son Young-hee (Busan City Sports Council), the silver medalist from the previous competition who competed in the same weight class, won silver medals in two consecutive competitions at the Asian Games with 124 kg in snatch, 159 kg in clean and jerk, and 283 kg in total.
Park Hye-jung, who has been on the rise this year, swept gold medals in three categories at the 2023 World Championships, lifting 124 kg in snatch, 165 kg in clean and jerk, and 289 kg in total. Park Hye-jung was the only athlete to win a gold medal in the total category at the World Championships, and the Korean weightlifting team also won a gold medal for the first time in three years since the 2021 competition, in which it swept four gold medals.
Riding momentum, Park Hye-jung entered the Asian Games and competed with confidence. In the last clean and jerk category, which led to a two-way match with Son Young-hee, she showed her best efforts to set a personal record even after her ranking was confirmed.
In an interview immediately after the match, Park Hye-jung said, “I am very happy that my sister (Son Young-hee) and I achieved good results. We have been receiving first qualifiers since the World Championships, so I think it is a glorious moment, and I will continue to work hard and do my best until we pass China.” revealed.
“I didn’t expect to be able to lift the third period due to my back injury, but I was able to do it thanks to my teammates, coaches, and managers. When I came out, I thought, ‘I finally did it!’ “I was confident that I could overcome 170kg next time (for the clean and jerk).”
Park Hye-jung left the mixed zone in a bright mood, expressing her bold ambition to work hard from being the ‘second Jang Mi-ran’ to becoming the ‘first Park Hye-jung.’
Meanwhile, Li Wenwen of the People’s Republic of China, who holds world records in the snatch, clean and jerk, and total, did not participate in this competition due to an elbow injury.
With this, Korean weightlifting has won 4 medals (1 gold, 1 silver, and 2 bronze), leaving only Jaeseong Lee’s turn in the men’s heaviest weight class (+109kg) this evening.
