Parisistas “know they cannot stop the Judiciary”: AMLO

Even though he confirmed his position that those who are carrying out the strike in the Judiciary in protest against the reform being promoted are free to do so, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador maintained that “they know, those in the Judiciary, they know that they cannot stop the operation of the Judiciary. Who has to do with that?”

“Who is responsible for dealing with this matter? It is the Judicial Council. (Council members) met yesterday and did not reach any agreement, because the president is Mrs. (Norma) Piña (President of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation).” That is why it is also being proposed that judges be elected to form an independent Court that will evaluate the performance of the members of the Judicial Branch.

On the other hand, when asked about the positions of the rating agencies warning of the risk that judicial reform in Mexico implies, López Obrador dismissed their warnings as “pure politicking.”

He considered that the projections that foreign investment in our country will fall are pure lies, suggesting that the real causes of the movements that the Mexican peso has had be investigated well and they will find that it is a global adjustment due to situations that are occurring in Japan, or related to the finances of the United States, “it is like believing the New York Times, Wall Street Journalthey are lies, they are slanderers”

López Obrador pointed out that this is equivalent to if Mexico had heeded the recommendations of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund as it was before, when they would impose the agenda on us and “there we went like sheep.” During his conference, he endorsed the veracity of a letter from the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit addressed to the Judicial Council where it emphasizes that stopping the activities of the Judicial Branch deviates from the law. However, in response to a direct question, the President said that a part of the text should be corrected where it refers to the origin of the dismissals of those who participate in the strike.

“My opinion is that they should not be prevented from demonstrating. Otherwise they will cry out loud and accuse us of being repressors. No, no, no. Our people are very aware and all public actors have to learn to limit themselves. When there are things like that, people don’t see it well. There is no need to prohibit them.”

López Obrador once again asked the workers of the Judicial Branch to “not allow themselves to be manipulated because there is nothing in the initiative that affects them, but they have every right to protest. Legally, the Judicial Council must deal with it and they know that they cannot stop providing their service, but this is a country of full freedoms.”
