Parisians to Vote on Raising Cost of Parking for SUVs in City Center

This move mainly targets wealthy drivers who come from outside the city and want to roam the streets of Paris.

Announcement

Parisians will vote on Sunday on the idea of raising the cost of parking four-wheel drive vehicles on the streets of the French capital, with the aim of removing them from the streets.

This step comes as part of the attempts of the mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, a socialist, to implement new changes, improve the condition of the city, and address air pollution.

This step mainly targets wealthy people who come from outside the city and want to wander the streets of Paris, and those coming to the capital, which is hosting the Summer Olympics in a few months.

Hidalgo surveyed parents outside a primary school in the 10th arrondissement near the Gare du Nord earlier, after pollution from traffic in small streets and a lack of green space had increased the problem, and residents were demanding fewer cars.

Encouraging leaflets were published on social media to support and encourage citizens to participate in the electoral process.

Hidalgo said in the publications that SUVs take up a lot of space in the narrow streets of Paris, pollute the environment greatly, and pose a threat to our health and our planet, in addition to the increased traffic accidents they cause compared to smaller cars.

If Parisians vote to increase parking tariffs, the cost of parking SUVs for non-residents in the downtown areas of Paris will rise to 18 euros per hour for the first two hours, compared to 6 euros per hour for smaller cars.

Prices apply to cars that weigh more than 1.6 tons and contain a combustion engine, or are hybrid, and those that weigh more than 2 tons for electric cars. This step does not include parking for Paris residents.
