Paris today: the start of Harrie’s hat trick and hockey players on the doorstep in the final

Will we see the first part of Harry’s hat trick today? Track cyclist Harrie Lavreysen has come to the Vélodrome de Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines with a mission: to win three gold medals. In Tokyo he succeeded in the team sprint and individual sprint, but he was involved in bronze in the keirin.

Tonight he can complete the first step towards his trilogy. At 7.11pm he will be in the first round of the team sprint with Roy van den Berg and Jeffrey Hoogland. The final will be at 8:10 pm. The trio are reigning Olympic champions, but competition from Australia and Great Britain is hot on their heels.

Lavreysen himself believes that he will have to go faster than ever with the orange sprint train to win gold again.

Marit Bouwmeester is the one who will win a gold medal anyway. She can’t pass him in the medal race (2.43pm) and yesterday she went into the sea as the most successful Olympic sailor in history.

A day after Sifan Hassan’s bronze medal – which looked like silver for a moment – in the 5,000 meters, Niels Laros and Stefan Nillessen will be in the final of the 1,500 meters at 8:50 p.m. The youngsters are only the fifth and sixth Dutch ever in the final Olympic battle at this distance.

Femke Bol and Cathelijn Peeters will run in the semi-final of the 400 meter hurdles earlier in the evening (8:07pm).

But before the Stade de France fills with athletic fans, we follow the performances of Uricas van de Kattevennen, Imagine and Beauville Z. Here are the horses of show jumping riders Kim Emmen, Harrie Smolders and Maikel van der Vleuten, who after a good day’s fun at Château de Versailles was today in the final.

In team sports, the day is especially dedicated to the quarter-finals. The handball players will face Denmark at 9:30 am, and the water polo players will face Italy at 3:35 pm.

Beach volleyball players Stefan Boermans and Yorick de Groot have to deal with a pair from Germany.

The hockey players have already completed one round and will play their semi-final this afternoon. At 2pm they face Spain in the Yves-du-Manoir stadium for a place in the final battle.
