French champions Paris Saint-Germain announced the signing of young Uruguayan midfielder Manuel Ugarte from Portuguese Sporting on a five-year contract.
The Parisian club said, in a statement, that the 22-year-old, “who will wear shirt number 4, has signed a contract until June 30, 2028.”
Reports indicated that the deal amounted to 60 million euros, to include the player who was on Chelsea’s radar.
Ugarte started his career with the Phoenix team in Montevideo before moving to Portugal from Famalicao Gate in late 2020.
Sporting quickly included him in the summer of 2021 and he was included in the Uruguay squad in the Qatar World Cup 2022, although he did not play any match and his country was eliminated from the group stage.
He became the third deal for the French capital club this summer, after the Spanish winger Marco Asensio from Real Madrid, and the Slovakian defender Milan Shkriniar from the Italian Milan, in the squad of the new Spanish coach Luis Enrique, who succeeded Christophe Galtier.
French defender Luca Hernandez is also expected to arrive from Bayern Munich, while uncertainty surrounds the future of star Kylian Mbappe, who said last month that he did not wish to extend his contract, which expires next year.
Therefore, the club may sell him this summer amid the Spanish Real Madrid lurking, instead of his departure as a free player next year.
