The disappointing Panathinaikos leaves the City of Light exhausted, after experiencing an unexpected defeat by the inexperienced Paris: 84-80.
The European champions had a very bad first half and found themselves losing by double digits: 42-27 in the 15th minute with three pointers by Malcolm, Ifi. Matias Lessor started the Greek counterattack and the break found the French at 45-39, with the first basket by Kendrick Nunn.
Panathinaikos got within shooting distance with Lorenzo Brown’s efforts for the one and only time (47-44), but lost touch again: 60-48, 69-56. The last attempt of the “greens” to return the game reduced the difference to 5 points (73-68 with Lesor’s efforts), but 5 minutes of intermission followed and the score became 80-68.
Matias Lessor, who played in front of his compatriots, was rescued from the wreck of Panathinaikos with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Lorenzo Brown had 14 points and Kendrick Nunn had 16.
Ergin Ataman used Sluka 2, Grant 6, Kalaitzakis, Grigonis 7, Osman 3, Papapetrou, Mitoglou 2, Hernangomet 9, Yurtseven 2. The injured K. Antetokounmpo was also absent this time.
Ifi 20, Shorts 16, Malcolm 14, Ward 9 stood out from the newcomer in the Euroleague Paris, of Tiago Splitter. The French had started the season with 2 defeats in as many matches.
Yannis Sfeiropoulos’ Red Star defeated Fenerbahce 76-57 in Polis and landed in first place in the standings with 3 wins in as many games, while Monaco is 2-0. Olympiacos, which earlier today defeated Armani Milano in Faliro with 89-68, is tied with its “eternal rival” at 2-1.
