Miss Liberty will therefore leave Paris and descend the Seine towards Le Havre before setting out to sea and crossing the Atlantic to reach New York.
Symbol of freedom and welcome
This trip is above all diplomatic and symbolic. One hundred and thirty-five years after the inauguration of the Statue of Liberty on Liberty Island, a small island off Manhattan, on the occasion of the centenary of independence, the two nations once again seal Franco- American by making “Tribute to all those who, on both sides of the Atlantic, made it possible to build the Statue of Liberty and who fought for what it symbolizes throughout the world”, explains the JDD in its columns.
Temporarily welcomed on Ellis Island, in New York, little Miss Liberty will resume her journey to Washington, the capital of the United States, where she will be installed in the gardens of the residence of the French ambassador. When will she go to Le Havre?
If the first Statue of Liberty (in spare parts) left with great fanfare from Rouen in 1885, the curious who wanted to wait for the passage to Havre of Miss Liberty will have to arm themselves with patience, a good pair of binoculars and with a hint of luck. The latter will leave the Norman port aboard the container ship Tosca (under the French flag) on the day of June 7. The shipowner CMA-CGM was chosen by the State for the transport.
