PARIS – Parisians who live near the Olympic zones will be able to identify themselves to police checks with a QR code during the Paris Games.
Security measures will be particularly strict during the launch ceremony, which will take place on July 26, 2024 on the Seine. There, the police will mark out an area to which no one will have access without reason. The head of the Paris police, Laurent Nunez, told the French newspaper Le Parisien.
People living in the zone with security measures will also have to report their possible visitors who want to watch the parade of boats on the Seine from windows, roofs, balconies or houseboats. “People entering this perimeter will have to show a legitimate reason why they need to go there. In other words, they will be individuals who are going to a hotel or home, or have a ticket to a ceremony,” zoomed Nunez.
In the interest of safety, the police expect to restrict traffic and close some metro stations. Additional measures will apply in selected exposed locations.
It’s even worse than we feared
The planned restrictions were immediately criticized by politicians. Senator Nathalie Goulet said they represent an attack on freedom. Even left-wing deputy Eric Coquerel did not hide his indignation. “This is scandalous, even worse than we feared,” he noted.
The French expect around 15 million visitors to come to Paris for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Above all, the opening ceremony, which for the first time will not be at the stadium, but in the city center, is a big challenge with regard to ensuring security.
In addition to the police, the transport company also faces criticism, which announced that, due to the strengthening of traffic, one-time metro tickets will cost almost twice as much during the Olympics and Paralympics, and other means of transport will become more expensive. Prices of monthly and annual coupons will not change.
