Covid-19 is a multi-target viral disease whose disorders caused by the virus surprise by the diversity of symptoms, sometimes atypical.

Besides the lungs, many other organs can be affected by Covid19 and give rise to neurological complications such as loss of smell, loss of taste, headache, dizziness, convulsions, strokes. (Stroke), changes in consciousness and hemiplegia. In addition, the breathing difficulties observed in patients with COVID-19 could come from, in addition to pulmonary involvement, an attack on the brainstem. This region, located between the brain and the spinal cord, which contains the breathing control centers. However, experts do not know more about the overall impact of this coronavirus on the central nervous system, while to date more than 10 million people are affected by the virus worldwide.

This is why, faced with the danger posed by this major public health issue on a global scale, the Brain Institute in conjunction with the Medical-University Department of Neuroscience AP-HP-Sorbonne University at the Pitié hospital -Salpêtrière, and with the significant financial support of the FIA Foundation, historical patron of the Institute concerned with public health and general interest questions, and the support of the FIA, is launching a large-scale study to rapidly assess and precisely all the potential neurological and psychiatric impacts of Covid-19 in affected patients, with the aim of improving the care, monitoring and rehabilitation of patients. The data collected will be the subject of an in-depth analysis, in particular thanks to artificial intelligence. The information obtained will be used in real time to draw the practical consequences for patients as quickly as possible by May 2021.

“At the Brain Institute, our mission is to find to heal. Also, the observations of our eminent specialists on this study will be decisive in supporting people with Covid-19 through appropriate care. This ambitious project is led by the DMU Neurosciences de la Pitié-Salpêtrière and the medical researchers of the Brain Institute, thanks to the FIA Foundation and the FIA, in favor of health for all. I want to thank them very warmly. “ Gérard Saillant, President of the Brain Institute and President of the FIA Medical Commission. The study will focus in more detail on: – the neuropsychiatric manifestations of the persons concerned – the psychiatric consequences for the patients themselves (due in particular to very long periods of resuscitation) as well as for their relatives – the consequences for patients already suffering neurological pathologies such as inflammatory diseases (multiple sclerosis …) and neurodegenerative diseases (Parkinson, Alzheimer …).

“The long-term health effects of coronavirus are just beginning to be understood, so this important project will provide vital information to share with the world. At the FIA Foundation, we are proud of our long-standing relationship with the Institute and its cutting-edge research. » Saul BILLINGSLEY, Executive Director of the FIA Foundation “The Brain Institute is probably one of the few centers in the world to be able to obtain an in-depth view of the neurology and psychiatry of Covid-19 infection. In the medium term, this will allow us, as healthcare professionals, to be prepared to face a new pandemic and to have all the weapons at our disposal to better combat it. We can also think that this infection, when it strikes already damaged brains, by a neurodegenerative or inflammatory disease, could give unknown effects. It is very important to know if we are not going to observe very atypical developments, for example in patients followed for Alzheimer’s disease or for multiple sclerosis. We still ignore a lot of things. “ Pr Jean-Yves Delattre, medical director of the Brain Institute and director of the Medical-University Department of Neurosciences AP-HP-Sorbonne University at the Pitié-Salpêtrière hospital, Pr Jean-Christophe Corvol (AP-HP, Sorbonne University) Scientific manager of the project and Dr Delorme (AP-HP, Sorbonne University) principal investigator.

About the Brain Institute

Created in 2010, the Brain Institute is a scientific and medical research center of international excellence, located in Paris at the heart of the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital.
