This comes after the Lebanese army announced on Tuesday that a Lebanese soldier was killed and three others were injured as a result of an Israeli bombing near a border village in southern Lebanon.
In response, the Israeli army said that it was reviewing a strike that harmed Lebanese forces in southern Lebanon.
The army stated in a statement, “The Lebanese Armed Forces were not the target of the strike. The Israeli army expresses its regret for this incident. The incident is under review.”
Israel and the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah have been exchanging fire across the Lebanese-Israeli border since the outbreak of war between Israel and the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) on October 7.
The Lebanese army said that the soldier, who held the rank of sergeant, was killed when a military point was exposed to Israeli bombing.
In contrast, the Israeli army stated that its soldiers acted “out of self-defense to repel an imminent threat detected from Lebanon” from a “known launching area and observation point” used by Hezbollah.
The United Nations peacekeeping force (UNIFIL) said in a statement on Tuesday that this is the first Lebanese army soldier killed during hostilities, adding that the Lebanese army is not engaged in a conflict with Israel.
