The management of London Heathrow Airport announced on Wednesday that Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport has overtaken it for the first time and has become the largest airport in Europe in terms of passengers served.
Heathrow Airport points out that Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport is closely followed by Amsterdam Schiphol and Frankfurt Airports.
By the end of September, Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport had served 19.27 million passengers and London Heathrow Airport 18.97 million.
The decline in the number of passengers served is explained by the management of Heathrow Airport due to delays in the implementation of the Covid-19 testing plan at the airport, as well as the introduction of new travel restrictions.
Heathrow Airport estimates that it will handle 22.6 million passengers this year and 37.1 million next year.
The airport previously forecast 29.2 million and 62.8 million passengers, respectively.
