Coming from the drag queen world and popularized by American television shows such as RuPaul’s Drag Race or Lip Sync Battle, where we see celebrities compete in epic battles, lip sync (or lip synchronization) consists of performing a playback hit in front of an often wild audience. If lip sync does not require any vocal talent, it still involves performing and embodying a song by giving the best of oneself on stage, where all eccentricities are permitted: dancers, light shows, staging ( almost) worthy of a Beyoncé concert, costumes…
In the evenings Paris and New York Lip Synceach candidate is judged on their performance, and the two most popular face each other in a final battle. “We have a lot of incredible performancesrelate Clara Schoch, with hyper-rehearsed choreographies.” Each evening has around ten candidates, who often come “with their crew”. Fireworks bra, trampoline or jean-sneakers, everyone is free to present themselves as they wish to put on the show. “The crowd supports you, the public is very good-natured”assures Clara, herself a fan of exercise.

Paris Lip Sync, a “friends story”
Paris Lip Sync was born in the basement of a bar in Paris, in 2019. Launched simply by friends who liked to lip sync in their bathroom, the event gradually gained momentum. scale to become a must on the Parisian scene. Today, Paris Lip Sync evenings are organized every two months in prestigious venues in the capital: Les Étoiles, the Bus Palladium, the Bellevilloise… Last September, the Paris Lip Sync evening was held at the Théâtre de la Porte Saint-Martin, which has a thousand seats, in the second part of a play with Chantal Ladesou. “We could do bigger, but we all have our jobs on the side”explains Clara, who is cultural coordinator.
The New York counterpart of the concept, New York Lip Sync, is in its infancy, but the first edition which took place last January in Brooklyn, in the Eris Evolution room, was a great success. “It was beyond my expectations,” says the Frenchwoman, initially intimidated by the idea of importing her concept of evenings into the country where lip sync was born.

An American invention with Frenchy sauce
If they don’t have “nothing invented”, the four friends behind Paris and New York Lip Sync still wanted to make lip sync evenings known outside the drag queen community, in order to make them accessible to everyone. “Everyone has their place. The idea is really lip sync with diversity on stage, with drag queens, but not only that”explains the young woman who has always been attracted to the entertainment industry.
Although the organization of lip sync evenings requires ” a lot of work “, and the proceeds from the sale of tickets for the first New York edition simply covered the costs, Clara fully intends to continue this great adventure: “The feedback we get each time is enough for us to organize another one.”
See you on April 13 in the Eris Evolution room between 10 p.m. and midnight for the next edition of New York Lip Sync, which will be followed by an after-party until 4 a.m. with the Brooklyn on Wax collective (included in the ticket price).
