The Olympic Games will be in their sixth day of competition on Thursday and the Spanish delegation, which saw several medals slip away on Wednesday, could be facing a turning point in Paris 2024, with new real chances of achieving podium positions.
Fran Garrigós’ bronze on the first day is the only great joy for Spain in the French capital so far, but from early on Thursday the number of world champions Álvaro Martín and María Pérez is expected to increase. Spanish judo will also have a double world champion in Nikoloz Sherazadishvili and boxing has Enmanuel Reyes one fight away from securing at least a bronze medal.
Closer still, the sailors Diego Botín and Florian Trittel are almost assured of a podium finish, with a sixth place in the Medal Race being enough, and they are aiming for gold in the waters of Marseille in the 49er class. In addition, the double scull rowing team, with the duo Aleix García and Rodrigo Conde, will also be competing for Olympic glory.
Thursday brings another ration of Carolina Marín and Carlos Alcaraz, who is seeking the Olympic dream alone after losing Rafa Nadal. In tennis, Cristina Bucsa and Sara Sorribes also want to continue. The men’s golf tournament starts with Jon Rahm among the favourites and, as for the national teams, the women’s field hockey team needs to beat South Africa to avoid complicating the quarterfinals, the ‘Guerreras’ are looking for a little joy and the men’s water polo team has an attractive test against the current champion.
