Breaking: Phil Wizard holt Gold
Phil Wizard won the Olympic debut in men’s breaking. The Canadian, seeded number 2, clearly beat local hero Dany Dann in the final. The judges scored all three rounds in favour of Philip Kim, Phil Wizard’s real name. In the women’s event, B-Girl Ami from Japan won gold the day before. It is quite possible that these will remain the only two Olympic medal sets. Breaking will no longer be part of the programme in Los Angeles in 2028.
Boxing: Yuting can’t be beaten either
Lin Yuting is the second athlete affected by the gender debate in boxing to win gold. The Taiwanese won the featherweight final against Julia Szeremeta from Poland 5-0 on Saturday evening. In recent days, Lin, like the Algerian Imane Khelif, has been at the center of a debate about her gender. Both were disqualified from the 2023 World Championships by the world association IBA after a gender test. They were allowed to compete in Paris because the International Olympic Committee no longer recognizes the IBA due to various corruption scandals and organizes the boxing competitions itself. Khelif won gold in the up to 66 kg class on Friday against the Chinese Yang Liu.
Water polo: First gold for Spanish women
It worked on the third attempt: thanks to an 11:9 victory against Australia, the Spanish water polo team won Olympic gold for the first time. Three years ago in Tokyo and in 2012 in London, they had to admit defeat to the USA in the final, but now they managed it against the 2000 Olympic champions. Spain had survived the preliminary round undefeated and had only been challenged in the semi-final against the Netherlands. After a 14:14 in regular time, the Spanish women won the penalty shootout 5:4.
The USA came away empty-handed this time. In the bronze medal match, they lost to the Dutch 10:11 after conceding a goal in the last second.
Diving: Cao completes China’s “gold sweep”
Chinese diver Yuan Cao successfully defended his Olympic title from the 10-meter springboard, giving his country a historic Grand Slam: All 8 gold medals in diving in Paris went to China. Cao won with a four-and-a-half forward somersault (547.50 points).
Sport climbing: Garnbret unreachable, Austria still at the top
Janja Garnbret remains the benchmark as an all-round climber. The 25-year-old celebrated the second Olympic gold of her career in Paris. For the second time, her sport now only consists of bouldering and lead, and speed has been separated out as a separate discipline. Jessica Pilz has Austria in a jubilant mood. Thanks to the two-time world champion from Haag, our neighboring country has now won its fifth medal, the last four of which have all come since Thursday. The Europeans were not completely alone on the podium: The American Brooke Raboutou broke the phalanx by winning silver. No Swiss climbers were able to qualify for the 33rd Summer Games in Le Bourget.
