Parents will soon be able to curb FIFA lootboxes

The planned option is in the most recent update info, in which developer EA says the menu option for ‘Playtime’ has been added. “Playtime gives more insight and control in how you play,” the studio writes.

The option would already be available on PC, true Eurogamer could already test it on. It will also be activated on game consoles on November 17th.

These tests show that with Playtime you can limit how much money you can spend in the game, for example to buy loot boxes in FIFA Ultimate Team. The option would mainly be intended for parents.

Under fire

Ultimate Team has been under fire for years. The game option allows players to purchase real money loot boxes containing random football players for their team. The Dutch Gaming Authority, among others, believes that this is a form of gambling.

EA refused to remove the function from their game in the Netherlands and went to court. The gambling watchdog was right, after which the game developer has appealed.
