Parents unite in petition against closure of class at Marcel-Pagnol primary school • François Desmeures

While the numbers led to a class closure at the start of the 2024 school year – after the one, already closed, at the start of the 2023 school year – new registrations took place, which were not taken into account before the CDEN (departmental council of the ‘National Education). Parents have done their calculations and fear classes that are too busy. This Friday evening, the delegates signed a petition as they left class. Successfully, 206 parents signed.

The school council took note of this upon returning from vacation, following the CDEN (departmental council of national education). The Marcel-Pagnol primary school in Ribaute-Les Tavernes must see one class close at the start of the 2024 school year. Another, after that already closed in September 2023. Too much for the parent delegates, who argue.

“At the time of the school census for the start of the school year, last November, the school reported a figure of 185 students”, explains Sabine Chabalier, parents’ delegate. It is this figure which guided the choice of National Education services. Except that, since then, the situation has changed. “There are at least 199 students for the next school year. There have been several developments, housing in the cooperative cellar… Registrations have taken place recently. There is no valid reason to close this class. “

The director reported developments in the situation to the management of departmental national education services (DSDEN). This Friday, at the end of classes, the parent delegates signed a petition, which has already collected 206 signatures. And hope for a reaction from the authority.

The parents have done their math: the number, no longer spread over nine, but over eight classes, would be 25 students per class, and up to 27 in the small section. “Two teachers are affected by the closure, continues a municipal elected official, Pierre-Marie Combemale: the last arrival at the school, who is about to leave, and another who is shared between the half-time of the director and that of the mayor.” Mayor who is, therefore, also a school teacher. “It’s a shame, continues the chosen one, during the last school council, the inspector did not come. And even if we don’t close the class, a teacher has already left.”

With a school reduced from nine to eight classes, the director would also go from part-time, relief, to third-time. Elected in Massanes – a town which sends its children to the Ribaute-les-Tavernes school – Grégory Poidevin came this Friday evening, with an elected colleague from the neighboring village, to support the mobilization in front of the school. With the hope that the National Education services will revise their initial intentions, during the traditional adjustments in July or September.
