Parents Report Lack of Bronchiolitis Vaccination for Muface Babies

A group of parent users of the General Mutuality of State Civil Servants (Muface) reported this week in Malaga Today that their babies were not being vaccinated against bronchiolitis, even though this immunization was launched in early October for healthy children under six months.

Given these complaints, the director of the Strategic Vaccination Plan of the Ministry of Health, David Moreno, clarified that private insurance mutual societies are responsible for supplying the drug to their policyholders. That is, those newborns included in Mufacethe Social Institute of the Armed Forces (Isfas) and the General Judicial Mutuality (Mugeju) must be vaccinated by these institutions.

He Andalusian Health Service (SAS) provides immunity in a way free to newborns in maternity wards of public hospitals before discharge. It is also responsible for the vaccination of those babies born in private hospitals, but which are not insured by Isfas, Muface or Mugeju. In this case, upon discharge, the parents must request the vaccine at the health center in your area. “We notify these mutual companies in advance,” said Moreno.

The drug in the strict sense it is not a vaccine. Because it is called a vaccine when the virus is inoculated so that the body generates natural antibodies. But in this case, they get punctured artificial (monoclonal) antibodies already manufacturedbecause given the young age of the babies they do not have time to produce them.

Until this fall, the bronchiolitis vaccine was only given to premature babies or children who were considered at risk due to their pathologies. The reason is that the previous medication (palivizumab) protected for one month. This required revaccination during the five months in which the virus circulates. respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), the main cause of bronchiolitis. That is why it was reserved for the most vulnerable children. But this year a new monoclonal antibody (nirsevimab) which has an effect of five months and with just one puncture protects the entire season. So it is expanded to healthy children.

Both monoclonal antibodies are for hospital use. They cannot be purchased in a pharmacy. Moreno explained that just as the previous vaccine (palivizumab) had been provided by private insurance companies to their associates for two decades, the new one (nirsevimab) must also be assumed. “They have to buy that medicine How do you buy the flu vaccine?he exemplified.

This immunization against bronchiolitis is voluntary like the rest of the vaccines included in the SAS schedule. But both the Health administration as the Spanish Association of Pediatrics they recommend them. Bronchiolitis is a respiratory infection that can be especially serious in infants, premature babies, and small or fragile children. Health centers and hospitals usually collapse in the winter period.

According to Moreno, this season it is expected that, after the immunization of the majority of newborns, hospital admissions will decrease. “We are expectant and illusionary because we believe it will be a success and we will see fewer hospitalizations,” he concluded.
