(London = Yonhap News) Correspondent Choi Yoon-jeong = The in-laws of Humza Yousaf, head of the Scottish Home Rule Government in the UK, escaped from being trapped in the Gaza Strip on the 3rd (local time).
The British Telegraph and BBC reported on this day that the El-Nakhla couple was included in the list of British people approved to cross the Rafah border into Egypt.
The parents of Yousaf’s wife, who live in Dundee, Scotland, were caught on the 7th when they went to visit a sick relative in the Gaza Strip just before the invasion by the Palestinian armed political faction Hamas.
It was reported through President Yousaf that they had been informing of the blockade situation in the Gaza Strip through video and crying for help.
They had been sheltering in a house with about 100 other people for the past three weeks, including a 2-month-old baby.
They left behind their non-British family members in the Gaza Strip.
“We can confirm that my parents left Gaza this morning,” Yousaf and his wife said in a statement. “The last four weeks have been a nightmare and we are grateful to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office for their support and everyone’s messages of comfort.”
However, they said, “I am personally relieved, but I am heartbroken by the continued suffering of the people of Gaza. We will continue to raise our voices to prevent the killing and suffering of innocent civilians.”
They added, “We hope everyone will agree to an immediate ceasefire, opening humanitarian corridors, and releasing hostages.”
