Parents of two children with epilepsy have donated 2 million euros to the University Medical Center (UMC) in Utrecht for research into a more individual treatment of patients with epilepsy, the UMC reports Monday. The research program financed with the money will start on Monday.
The treatment of epilepsy has long been the same for all patients.
UMC Utrecht will use the 2 million euros for research into precision medicine, whereby more attention is paid to the personal circumstances of a patient. “Different forms of epilepsy appear to need a different approach,” says the UMC.
The research looks at genetic research, epilepsy surgery and individual predictions of, for example, the risk of new attacks and the effect of treatments.
