Florida authorities managed to locate baby Amelia Martínez, who was reported missing, safe and sound. through an Amber Alert in Broward Countyin a home located in Pembroke Pines.
According to the police report, agents from the Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT) carried out an operation in the home to recover the little girl, who was only eight months old.
During the operation, Jacob Alexander Howard and Arys María Martínez, the minor’s parents, were taken into custody. The pair went to pick up the minor from a child care center despite having lost parental rights, starting the aforementioned Amber Alert.
According to local media America TeVé, the minor is under the legal care of her grandmother, who left her at the aforementioned children’s center to attend to some matters. When she returned, she was informed that the baby’s father had picked her up, so she alerted authorities.
After obtaining the little girl, her mother tried to take her to Orlando, but the police managed to locate her thanks to the report issued by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
The aforementioned media indicates that the parents lost parental rights because both were involved in a case of domestic violence.
The couple married in February 2022, and a few months later the man was arrested for having strangled his partner until she lost consciousness. The next day, the woman filed for a protective order against the man, stating that she felt threatened.
Everything got worse in mid-2023, when the police responded to a call made by the woman, who informed the officers that the man had suffered an overdose. Additionally, she presented videos that made it clear that he attacked her, on occasions, even when the woman was carrying the baby in her arms.
The subject was tried on charges such as illegal detention, aggravated assault and domestic assault, but the State declined to prosecute him in August 2023.
Now, both face charges of kidnapping a child under 13 years old, and in the man’s case, interfering with the custody of a minor and violation of probation.
