Parents killed by Shana (22) are fighting for a safer traffic situation in Osdorp

Today, a number of speed bumps have been constructed on Wolbrantskerkweg in Osdorp. The 22-year-old Shana Leurs was hit there on her bicycle last March. A day later she died of her injuries. Since then, her parents have been fighting for a safer traffic situation. “If this reduces the number of casualties, our mission has been accomplished.”

The site of the accident is still littered with photos and flowers for the 22-year-old from Amsterdam. New are the thresholds that were placed this morning. “For us it is of course mustard after meals,” says Shana’s mother Wanda. “Our daughter has died and we will not get her back with it. But the fact that there are speed bumps now makes us proud.”

Shana’s parents wrote a letter to Mayor Halsema after the accident. “Three weeks later we sat at the table with the alderman,” says father Ivar. “I am pleased that the municipality has acted so quickly.”

“Race track”

Local residents already complained earlier about the unsafe situation on Wolbrantskerkweg. Wanda: “The cars just used it as a race track. It’s really not normal what speed passed here. It means a lot to us that something is being done about it now.”

The thresholds that exist now are only temporary. When the police investigation is completed, the final thresholds are placed.
