Parents Killed by Drinking Hand Sanitizer, 5 Children Become Orphans

MOSCOW, KOMPAS.com – A total of five children on Russia reported to be orphan, after their parents were killed downing hand sanitizer because there is no liquor.

The children’s father lost his life first, with doctors struggling to save their mother in hospital for 10 days.

On Thursday (3/12/2020), the 48-year-old woman was declared dead by local health authorities, it was reported Daily Mirror.

According to the doctor’s statement, the mother was also unconscious while receiving treatment in which she suffered damage to internal organs.

The woman, who was not identified, became the ninth death toll for drinking illegal hand sanitizers in Russia.

The illegally obtained disinfectant contains 69 percent methanol. Meanwhile, only about 3.5 percent received distribution permits.

Methanol said to cause kidney damage, blindness, and death. Russian health authorities have warned the public not to consume them.

Authorities said the incident took place in Tomtor village, Tattinsky District, Yakutia Region, on 19 November.

The couple of five children reportedly attended the party that was being held there. They then drank hand sanitizer because there was no alcohol.

The victims of methanol poisoning ranged in age from 28 to 69, with six of them hospitalized in the regional capital, Yakutsk.

Apart from the parents of the five children, doctors said they could save the 32-year-old man even if he lost his sight.

So far, Russian police have announced that they have confiscated 4,897 liters of hand sanitizer. However, they believe there is more circulating in the community.
