Parents file two $ 100 million lawsuits after school shooting in the United States

Three students were killed in the shooting that took place on November 30 at a school in the city of Oxford, Michigan. A fourth student later died from the injuries he sustained. A total of ten students and a teacher were shot during the school shooting.

The suspected 15-year-old perpetrator opened fire and fired around him before he was confronted by the police and arrested. He is now charged with murder and terrorism, writes the news agency AP.

The parents of one of those who were injured during the school shooting, are now filing two lawsuits of 100 million dollars each.

100 million each

Jeffrey and Brandi Franz, the parents of Riley (17) and Bella Franz (14), are filing a giant lawsuit against Oxford High School, as they believe the school did not do enough to prevent the school shooting from happening.

Riley Franz was shot in the neck during the school shooting at Oxford High School on November 30. Little sister Bella was sitting next to her when she was shot. Both survived the school shooting.

The parents are filing a total of two lawsuits, each of which is worth 100 million dollars. This corresponds to almost 900 million kroner in total. The lawsuits are the first known lawsuits filed in connection with the school shooting at the school in Michigan.

The news agency AP writes that the lawsuit is against Oxford High School, Superintendent Tim Throne, Principal Steven Wolf, two counselors, two teachers and another staff member.

“The school knew or should have known that the guidelines, procedures, the education inspectorate and the discipline were insufficient for the tasks that the defendants were required to perform,” it is stated in the lawsuit.

The parents arrested

It was 15-year-old Ethan Crumbley who carried out the school shooting on November 30, which killed four students. Crumbley is now charged with murder and terrorism, among other things.

Ethan Crumbley’s parents, Jennifer and James, were also arrested as a result of the incident. They are now charged with negligent homicide.

The pistol used in the shooting was purchased by Ethan’s father, James Crumbley, a few days in advance. According to prosecutors, Ethan had full access to the gun.

Clear signs in advance

The morning before the shooting, Oxford High School staff held a meeting with Ethan and his parents. A teacher at the school had found a drawing that Ethan had made, and was worried.

In the drawing you could see a gun, a bullet and a person who appeared to have been shot. Ethan had also written “My life is useless” and “The world is dead” on the drawing.

One of the lawsuits of the Franz couple refers to precisely this incident, and criticizes the school for not having expelled and searched Ethan Crumbley before the shooting.

Superintendent Tim Throne says Ethan’s parents refused to keep their son away from school, despite concerns from the teacher.

In a public statement, Throne says that the school will now start a review of the entire school system, as other schools have done when faced with similar incidents.

Difficult to sue a school

Attorney Vince Colella expresses doubts that the school district can be sued at all for not throwing Crumbley out of school earlier. State law makes it difficult to succeed in suing public bodies such as schools.

“You have to show that the administration and faculty members were grossly negligent, which means that they had a ruthless disregard that such a situation would take place,” says lawyer Vince Collela.

The lawyer for the parents who filed the lawsuit, Geoffrey Fieger, also says that it can be challenging to sue a school.

– I understand that this will not be easy, but now it is time to do something about it, says lawyer Fieger during a press conference on 9 December.
