A group of 42 parents reported grave robbery after a seance at Rusthof cemetery in Leusden.
The complaint is against six members of a spiritual group who held the seance on September 11. A complaint has also been made against the director of the cemetery who gave permission for the ritual, reports RTV Utrecht.
There is still a lot of uncertainty about what happened at the cemetery. It is established that a spiritual group gathered in the dark at children’s graves. The group allegedly tried to contact the spirits of deceased children.
The case came to light when a father found a camera that had been left behind at his child’s grave. In the images he saw unknown adults who had gathered in the dark at the children’s graves.
Quieter outside opening hours
Not long after the incident came to the fore, Mayor Lucas Bolsius apologized. In a letter to the bereaved families, he stated that “a group of spiritual people” were investigating the energies of deceased people with the permission of the cemetery director. That happened outside opening hours because it is quieter then.
In October, the municipality held a meeting where relatives could ask questions. According to many parents, there were no real answers. That is why they now choose to take the step to court.
Why so mysterious?
Before the group declaration, two parents had already filed an individual declaration of grave robbery. The two also want the congregation to disclose the identities of the members of the spiritual group. “I have a strange taste in my mouth. Why are you being so secretive?” said one of the two, Floor Drost-Laabidi, at RTV Utrecht.
At the end of October it was announced that the National Ombudsman will investigate the séance. After that investigation, the municipality is considering bringing parents who want to contact the spiritual group. But that takes Drost-Laabidi too long. “We don’t want any more delay. This just keeps muddling on. It really makes no sense at all,” he says. Floor and his wife Radia have two daughters who are at Rusthof.
