Parents are sometimes superheroes and sometimes they are tired creatures who sometimes slip up in an attempt to keep all the balls in the air.
Lisa (40), mother of Elodie (15), Avery (8) and Reeva (6):
“In early December, Avery came home with an invitation to a disco party to which a friend had invited the whole class. I put it in my calendar for December 24, which I thought was a pretty crazy day for a party. Of course, that didn’t bother Avery, who was looking forward to a night of dancing with the whole class and not going was not an option.
On the morning of the party she was showering extensively and I was recovering from a busy week with a cup of coffee. Things went wild in the class app: one parent after the other sent photos of the party.
“She was very disappointed”
Apparently that had already been the night before, I hadn’t read the invitation properly in the hectic December. Avery was very upset. I made up for my mistake by promising to organize a disco party on her birthday, also for the whole class.”

Noëlle (34), mother of Floortje (14) and Saar (6):
“There is a school photo of Floortje of which I still know exactly how she looks. She was about 4 years old and had just started kindergarten. I was young, single, worked a lot and earned little. To save costs she didn’t go to the out-of-school care and I did everything during school hours. On a stressful morning I sometimes wanted to forget something.
So was that one Monday when I asked her to put on the only sweater that wasn’t hanging on the drying rack. She had gotten it from my grandmother: a woolen case with a bear stitched on it. Not necessarily my taste. We were running late so she went to class with her hair all over the place in that hideous sweater.
“Now – ten years later – I can still recall that photo”
When I stood in the square at the end of the school day, one after the other came out perfectly haired and dressed. Girls with tight braids, boys in suits. And in between, Floortje walked towards me waving: ‘Mama! Today the school photographer was here!’
In the class photo, the contrast between her and the children was so great that I can still recall it ten years later. And luckily I can laugh just as hard about it.”
