In the United States, in Utah, the child of a youtuber who gave education advice was found malnourished, tape around the wrists and ankles. She was arrested.
A YouTuber specializing in parenting education arrested in the United States on suspicion of aggravated child abuse. Ruby Franke and her husband launched a family YouTube channel called 8 Passengers in 2015.
This channel, now defunct but which had nearly 2.3 million subscribers, told their life as a couple and that of their six children in Utah. With his collaborator, Jodi Hildebrandt, also arrested, they advocated in their videos a style of severe education.
But this Wednesday, one of Ruby Franke’s 12-year-old sons came out of the house through the window. He went to a neighbour’s house, taped around his wrists and ankles, to ask him for food and water. This neighbor then notified the police.
The boy, described as ’emaciated and malnourished’, was taken to hospital, where he was placed under medical supervision ‘due to the deep lacerations he had suffered while being tied up with a rope and his malnutrition’ , reports Sky News.
Other children under the protection of social services
One of their 10-year-old daughters was also found malnourished and two other children were taken into the care of child protective services.
Ruby Franke and Jodi Hildebrandt are still in custody according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.
Despite their notoriety, the Franke family, members of the Mormon Church, had been the subject of virulent criticism in recent years. In particular for mistreatment but no action had yet been taken.
Local Child Protective Services were reportedly called in June 2020 following a petition requesting an investigation into the family, note ABC News. The petition was prompted by a now-deleted video in which one of the children said he slept on a bean bag for seven months as punishment for his bad behavior.
