Car concern Daimler and subsidiary Mercedes-Benz pay a settlement of one and a half billion dollars in the United States for fraud with the emission values of cars.
In approximately 250,000 cars and vans, diesel engine emissions were higher than the company suggested. According to the American authorities, environmental laws have been violated by the use of so-called cheating software.
The settlement has been reached with the US Department of Justice and environmental regulator EPA. The deal has yet to be approved by the judge.
Hundreds of millions more
Germany’s Daimler thinks it will have to allocate another 700 million dollars to settle a mass claim from duped consumers in the US. The multinational also expects to incur hundreds of millions more in costs to meet the requirements of the settlements.
In Germany, the company was fined last year for using fraudulent software. Even then there were additional costs, because hundreds of thousands of cars had to be returned to the garage.
Volkswagen has settled for $ 2.8 billion in the US in the past because of its part in the diesel scandal. The Italian-American car manufacturer Fiat Chrysler also paid hundreds of millions of dollars in fines and settlements for fraudulent software.
