In exchange for half a billion dollars, HBO Max received the entire catalog of South Park. It concerned 23 existing seasons and the exclusive rights to the three series that followed. Disagreement has arisen over those three seasons.
Because of the corona crisis, many fewer episodes were suddenly made. Season 24 only got two, Season 25 had six, and Season 26 is reportedly getting six as well. And that while normally ten episodes per series appear.
According to Warner Bros. Discovery deliver those new episodes much more because you can attract subscribers with it. Paramount+ saw that too and closed a new deal with the makers of South Park. Various specials are made for 900 million dollars. Those longer episodes fall outside the regular seasons and therefore also outside the agreements with HBO Max.
According to HBO Max, those specials have been a trick to get around the exclusivity deal. So there would be a breach of contract. Paramount disagrees. The company also states that it is still receiving money from Warner South Park to stream, while the episodes are already online.
South Park can not be seen in the Netherlands via HBO Max. The latest season kicked off February 8 on Comedy Central.
