Parcel deliverers go to court to ‘PostNL | unfair rate’ NOW

The Parcel Association for Parcel Distribution (BVPD) is going to court, because PostNL would not pay a fair rate to deliverers. That confirms spokesman Pieter Paul Slikker to NU.nl.

Last Wednesday, the association issued a letter (PDF) to PostNL for an ultimatum for Monday morning, with the most important requirement being a “concrete offer for a fair rate”. According to the BVPD, the company has not sufficiently complied with this.

The discussion about rates is not new, but the current circumstances have led to sharpened relationships.

Parcel deliverers are extra busy due to the corona measures. As many packages are delivered as usual around Christmas and Sinterklaas, and deliverers must stay at home if they experience colds causing more work for fewer people. Delivery also takes longer according to the BVPD due to extra hygiene measures.

In addition to the requirement for the tariff offer, the interest group also asks for compensation for the extra actions that must be carried out because of the virus outbreak.

‘Step to court is incomprehensible’

A PostNL spokesperson said that a letter had been sent back on Monday morning. In it, the company calls the step of the BVPD “incomprehensible”. For example, due to the rest on the street, deliverers would be on the spot faster, and packages could more often be given directly to the addressee, because more people are at home.

PostNL furthermore only wants to discuss tariffs with “individual entrepreneurs”. The company wants to schedule a new meeting for consultation with the interest group.
