More than a week ago, an 18-year-old parcel deliverer from Woerden killed a 42-year-old man in Wijchen. The Public Prosecution Service (OM) suspects the director of deliberately taking the life of the Wijchenaar, a spokesperson said on Monday in conversation with NU.nl.
The eighteen-year-old man is currently still in prison. On December 9 it will be decided whether his detention will be extended. The case has stirred up a lot in Wijchen, where hundreds of people attended a silent march at the end of last month.
The Public Prosecution Service cannot yet say anything about the suspect’s motive, because the investigation is still ongoing, said the spokesman. The suspect worked as a parcel deliverer during the incident on 24 November, but it is not known for which company.
Witnesses told Gelderland broadcaster that the victim, who was walking his dog at that moment, spoke to the suspect about his dangerous driving behavior. He would then have deliberately run over the victim twice. The eighteen-year-old motorist, who was driving a white van, fled after the collision. After a chase, the police arrested him later in the evening in nearby Beuningen.
On the Saturday after the incident, dozens of people walked through Wijchen, including a banner against senseless violence. Hundreds of people had gathered along the route. The trip, in which Mayor Marijke van Beek and aldermen were also present, led through the residential area of De Ververt, where the victim lived, and past the spot of the collision, where many flowers and candles were left behind.
