Paramount puts film on calendar for 2023 – TrekZone Network

It’s that time again: The big film studios are rearranging their release calendars. Because of Covid-19, the announcements are mainly characterized by delays, but Paramount unexpectedly has the first date in 5 years for a new “Star Trek” movie on the program.

The industry magazine Deadline first reported on the program item. Accordingly, the next cinema adventure should start on June 9th, 2023, so just enough time when you should finally have agreed on a specific project after numerous aborted attempts.

In the meantime I didn’t feel like doing the bickering hack: Director SJ Clarkson (CC-BY-2.0 vagueonthehow)

We remember: Already in 2016 a sequel to “Beyond” with star guest Chris Hemsworth as Papa-Kirk was announced, which crashed in the contract negotiations with the actors – director Clarkson jumped out. After that, Quentin Tarrantino kept us in suspense that he wanted to capture an adult reinterpretation of “Star Trek” (supposedly inspired by “Yesterday’s Enterprise” or “A Piece of The Action”). Meanwhile, Noah Hawley could briefly hope to bring “Star Trek 14” into the box. But after the change at the top of Paramount, it was recently said that Kalinda Vazquez would be writing an entirely new script.

This is where things get a little crazy. One so far unconfirmed Message from io9 According to the now scheduled start, it is not about the film that Vazquez ‘is writing a script for, but another project produced by JJ Abrams. If it is true, one would have to assume that one of the previous projects that had been put on hold is now picking up speed again, or that another script has been developed to maturity unnoticed by the public. After all, two years until the release is not an endless amount of time to shoot an elaborate blockbuster like “Star Trek” and bring it through post-production. However, since confirmation from another source is missing so far, we still classify this report as a rumor.

What does it all mean? Paramount’s announcement is yet another sign that the movies should actually move on soon. One can speculate diligently about the content or even just the relevant timeline. In any case, it is the first film project since all parts of the “Star Trek” license are reunited under the umbrella of ViacomCBS. Together with the arrival of Emma Watts at the helm of Paramount Pictures and the recent willingness to experiment with streaming formats, we don’t want to bet on whether we’ll have a fourth Kelvin film, an experimental spin-off à la “Joker”, another reboot or something will see something completely different.
