The 17th Paralympic Games have concluded in Paris and it is clear that the presence of the Greek delegation in Paris was excellent and one of the best in the history of Greek sports – if not the best – considering the level of the Games.
A total of 419 world and Paralympic records were set at the Paris Games in athletics, swimming, bench lifting, archery, shooting, canoeing, track cycling and rowing, the most ever in Paralympic Games history. This fact confirms that the Paris Games were the best of all time in terms of performance.
At this high level, the Greek delegation stood famously having, based on the data, perhaps the best presence in its history with the assistance of all 37 athletes, the three companions and all the coaches who did a tremendous job in the three years until team to arrive in Paris and present this extraordinary image.
In 2004 in Athens, Greece won 20 medals (3 gold – 13 silver – 4 bronze) but was the organizing country. Four years later (2008) in Beijing, Greece cashed in on the momentum created in 2004, collecting 24 medals (5-9-10) in the best harvest of a Greek expedition to date, having in its composition the “Greek Michael Phelps” (a description that the Americans performed) Charalambos Taiganidis who alone won six medals (Phelps had five individually and three from the relay).
In 2024, Paralympic sports have grown to a very large extent globally and the competition is tougher than ever. The number of 419 world and Paralympic records speaks for itself about the level of the Games in Paris.
At the 17th Paralympic Games, Greece’s record was outstanding.
– 13 medals in total, with 3 gold, 3 silver and 7 bronze
–5 sports in which Greeks won medals
– 6 new medalists
– 4 medalists under 24 years old, two only 19 years old
– 35 placings in the top 8, which means 35 Paralympians
– 30 appearances in finals
Individual achievements that made history:
-Grigoris Polychronidis (with ramp operator Katerina Patronis) climbed the podium for the 5th consecutive event, “breaking” the tie of four with Pyrros Dimas at the Olympic Games.
-Nassos Gavelas (with guide Yiannis Nyfantopoulos) became the first Greek Olympic and Paralympic runner to do back to back while retaining his title, something that overall only Pyrros Dimas (weightlifting), Kahi Kakiashvili (weightlifting) have achieved ) and Miltos Tedoglou (length) in the Olympics and our legendary swimmers Charalambos Taiganidis and Christos Tabaxis in the Paralympics. And Nassos is only 24 years old.
– Thanasis Konstantinidis became the first track and field athlete to win two medals, one gold, in the same event. The second was bronze.
– Christina Gentzou, with the bronze medal she won in tae kwon do, became the youngest athlete to achieve this in the Greek history of the Paralympic Games. Born on July 26, 2005, she received the medal at the age of 19 years and 35 days! And the second youngest was in this expedition as Leda Manthopoulou won the silver medal in the 100m at the age of 19 years and 78 days.
– Thanasis Konstantinidis at the age of 54 years and 128 days became the oldest Greek athlete to win a gold medal in an Olympic or Paralympic Games.
-Dora Paschalidou won in judo the first Greek medal in the history of the Paralympic Games. In fact, as noted by the IPC (International Paralympic Committee), her achievement is even greater as both she and her coach (Paralympian himself) Theoklitos Papachristos, have total vision loss.
– The sport of tae kwon do premiered at the Paralympic Games and Greece had two entries with Christina Gentzou (65k) and Eleni Papastamatopoulou (+65k) and in the first appearance it was 2/2 winning two medals.
– Sotiris Galogavros became the first Greek athlete to participate in the shooting final of the Paralympic Games.
-Areti Arabela Spyridou at the age of 12 years and 192 days became the youngest athlete to have participated in the Paralympic Games.
From the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens onwards, whoever is the flag bearer at the Opening Ceremony of the Games also wins a medal.

-Beijing 2008 – Charalambos Taiganidis, 2 gold medals 100m freestyle/backstroke (S13), 3 silver medals 50m freestyle (S13), 100m butterfly (S13), 200m medley (SM13) and 1 bronze 400m freestyle (S13) swimming
– London 2012 – Christos Tabaxis silver medal 50m backstroke (S1) swimming
-Rio 2016 – Grigoris Polychronidis silver medal individual (BC3) shot put
-Tokyo 2021 – Thanasis Konstantinidis silver medal korina (F32) athletics, Anna Deda bronze medal in mixed pairs (BC3) shot put together with Grigori Polychronidis and Anastasia Pyrgioti
– Paris 2024 – Manolis Stefanoudakis bronze javelin (F54) athletics, Theodora Paschalidou bronze 70k (J1) judo
