The South African Department of Correctional Services has approved the request of 37-year-old Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius for parole from prison, the Associated Press reports.
Pistorius, convicted of the murder of Reeva Steenkamp, will be released on January 5, 2024. Over the next five years, he will be prohibited from leaving the territory of Pretoria, where he will live, without the approval of the authorities. In addition, he will have to undergo a program to overcome anger problems and perform community service.
The murder in question was committed in the early morning of February 14, 2013. According to prosecutors, Reeva Steenkamp was killed during a lengthy argument: Oscar shot her four times through the door and fatally wounded the girl, then punched the door to open it, pulled the dying Reva out of the bathroom and tried to give her artificial respiration. The defense argued that Pistorius mistook Reeva for a burglar who had broken into the house.
In October 2014, Pistorius was sentenced to five years for the manslaughter of Steenkamp, and was released from prison on supervised release after serving just one year of his sentence. However, on December 3, 2015, the Supreme Court of Appeal upheld the prosecutor’s objection and ruled that Pistorius should have been found guilty of premeditated murder, for which the Paralympian faced a prison sentence of 15 years.
The sentence was revised. In July 2016, Pistorius was sentenced to six years in prison by a Pretoria court.
In November 2017, the court again revised its decision and sentenced the athlete to 15 years in prison – the minimum term for premeditated murder.
