Asunción: The head of the Ministry of Education and Science (MEC), Luis Ramírez, spoke about the academic challenges that await him in 2024. He reiterated the need to pursue an education that helps students understand what they read and not just focus on infrastructure projects.
Ramírez claimed that problems with infrastructure in educational institutions have been talked about for years, but society forgets other key issues in education, such as the pedagogical aspect.
Recently, a report by the International Program for Student Monitoring (PISA) revealed that in Paraguay, 7 out of 10 students do not understand basic texts and, according to the MEC Minister, it is necessary to work towards training young people who are proficient in reading, to understand and write.
“This creates opportunities to attack democracy, because if someone does not understand what they are hearing, speaking and how we can come to an agreement on an issue of conflict, violence is resorted to. To ensure Paraguayan democracy, it is important that we understand what we read and open ourselves to the world,” he said on radio station 1020 AM.
According to Ramírez, just thinking about renovating schools will not help the country’s growth. He said some works have not been completed since 2008 and many educational institutions have benefited from infrastructure projects several times in two years.
“You invest in renovation, but after two years what was repaired has to be repaired again. There are a lot of failures in the infrastructure, which is why we never get anywhere. It seems that some companies practically never completed the work,” concluded the head of the Ministry of Education.
