It was probably a gust of wind: a 57-year-old paraglider pilot crashed in the Dachstein Mountains area on Saturday afternoon. The man from the Wels-Land district was out with his 21-year-old son around 1 p.m. and took paragliding flights from Stoderzinken. At an altitude of around 2,300 meters, the 57-year-old’s paraglider suddenly collapsed, probably due to the wind, and the man fell uncontrollably around 100 meters into the depths. Despite a rescue parachute being deployed immediately, the 57-year-old hit the ground in a steep rocky gully south of the summit of the Scheichenkoppen and was seriously injured.
The son was able to observe the accident from the air and called the emergency services. Due to the weather and local conditions, rescue by helicopter was not initially possible, the police reported. The injured man was taken by members of the Ramsau am Dachstein mountain rescue service towards the summit, where he was rescued by the Martin 1 emergency medical helicopter via Taubergung. He was flown to the LKH Schwarzach.
