Paradox Interactive CEO Fredrik Wester Addresses Financial Report and Cities: Skylines II Performance

Paradox Interactive published a financial report (trans PCGamesN) summarizing the entire calendar year 2023 and at its conclusion there was a comment from CEO Fredrik Wester. These are the final words about the results, which are not bad, but as Wester himself states, they could have been much better. Of course, it is worth mentioning that the Swedish publisher and developer achieved a turnover of SEK 995.6 million, which represents an increase of 72 percent compared to the same period last year, but according to Wester, the individual games did not always perform completely flawlessly and there is space for improvement. The company’s CEO mentions Cities: Skylines II as the first title that didn’t achieve the results Paradox had hoped for, which is a recurring theme and another indication of the problem that Colossal Order developers now have to deal with. Last week, after a series of not so positive news, we informed you about the drop in the number of active players, now Fredrik Wester is calling for the game to be improved and to achieve a quality that would meet the expectations of players.

“Emotions are mixed when it comes to newly released games,” Wester said in a machine-translated v the conclusion of the financial report. “The big game was Cities: Skylines II, but we’re sorry that we didn’t meet the expectations of the players in terms of performance and also that we couldn’t release the title on all platforms at the same time,” adds Wester, reminding that while the PC version was already released on October 24 last year, the promised PS5 and Xbox Series versions are currently scheduled for the second quarter of 2024. On the other hand, Wester reassures investors in particular that despite the game’s shortcomings, the title sold well and managed to get over a million players to buy in the first three months. However, it is certain that the developers must continue to work on the game and bring it to a much more satisfying state than it is at the moment. “At the same time, it’s clear that we can and, above all, must work better,” says Wester critically, immediately confirming that the developers from Colossal Order are working on changes and improvements. “We are fully committed to continuing to improve and further develop the game as we strongly believe in its future and will do everything we can to [s titule] got to a higher level,” promises Wester.

But it’s not just the Cities sequel that Wester has critical comments about. He describes The Lamplighters League as a commercial failure, and subsequently speaks in general about a bad approach to the entire portfolio, or way to expand it further. However, he concludes his comment by saying that Paradox is a company that is not troubled by debts, and according to its CEO, it also has considerable financial reserves and therefore the conditions for growth. Last but not least, he also mentions an “exciting portfolio” of upcoming games and promises that 2024 will be another intense year in which the company will achieve further successes. In the case of the second part of Cities, however, the overall strategy is disrupted by the fact that more players are currently playing the first part, and mainly that the developers failed to set an adequate pace of adding the promised things along with fixing what at first seemed like a problem for several weeks, but in the final for example, the mentioned performance did not improve the game much, and players still lack tools for creating mods, for example.
