Frankfurt am Main – Para-archer Flora Words is “Sports Scholarship Holder of the Year” 2024. This was announced Deutsche Bank and Sports Aid as part of the first ever POWWOW Sports Festivals in Düsseldorf. The ninth-place finisher at last year’s European Championships was the only German archer to qualify for the Paralympics. In Paris, she finished ninth. Despite a leg amputation and several operations, the 26-year-old from Göttingen completed her exams for her primary school teaching degree at the University of Kassel and passed them with flying colors. In the public online vote initiated by Deutsche Bank and Sporthilfe in July, Flora Kliem received the most votes among all sports fans, beating Tabea Botthof (Eishockey), Wounds of Herden (Athletics / Long Jump), Nico Paufler (canoe racing) and Sonja Zimmermann (Hockey) in shared second place.
This year, Deutsche Bank and Sporthilfe awarded the prestigious award, which honors successful top athletes for exceptional achievements in sports and studies, for the twelfth time. Deutsche Bank doubled the winner’s monthly scholarship from 300 euros to 600 euros for 18 months. For the same period, the four finalists received additional funding of 50 percent of the scholarship.
Tim AlexanderChief Marketing Officer (CMO) of Deutsche Bank: “The five finalists are absolute role models, just like all the other 300 or so top talents that we support with the Deutsche Bank Sports Scholarship. What they all achieve every day and the dedication with which they approach both their sport and their studies is impressive and deserves our highest recognition. That is why, as a national sponsor of Sporthilfe, it is a matter close to our hearts to support those who are building their professional future through studies alongside competitive sport.”
Karin Orgeldingerresponsible for athlete support on the board of Sporthilfe: “Flora Kliem has proven, not least by qualifying for the Paralympics in Paris, what enormous potential she has. What particularly sets her apart is her focus on the essentials and her perseverance. The way she mastered her studies with equally good results as in sport, despite numerous setbacks, is impressive. Among five personalities with outstanding achievements in sport and studies who made it to the final vote, Flora is a worthy sports scholarship holder of the year – the twelfth award winner since 2013 that we have been able to honor together with Deutsche Bank.
