Papua Police Chief Denies Attacked at Home of Deputy Governor Klemen Tinal

Kapolda Papua, Inspector General Mathius Fakhiri denied reports that there was a mass attack of a group of people at the funeral home of the late Deputy Governor of Papua, Klemen Tinal.

Previously, a number of reports said the attack by a group of mobs occurred when a number of officials visited Klemen Tinal’s funeral home, who died on Friday (21/5).

“There was no attack, that’s not true,” said Mathius when contacted CNNIndonesia.com, Saturday (22/5) night.

Fakhiri admitted that he and a number of his subordinates visited the funeral home. Regarding the issue of the attack, Fakhiri said that it is a common culture in Papuan society.

“The culture is that if the family of the deceased dances the custom and they cry to the corpse,” he said.

Previously reported, Klemen Tinal passed away in Jakarta, Friday (21/5). This news was confirmed by the Director General of Regional Autonomy at the Ministry of Home Affairs Akmal Malik.

Klemen Tinal is a native Papuan born 50 years ago. He was appointed Deputy Governor with Governor Lukas Enembe by President Joko Widodo in 2018. Klemen Tinal, who died today, also served as Deputy Governor of Papua in the era of 6th President Soesilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
