Papu: Traditional Polish Food Bar in Linz – Featuring Pierogi and More!

The 33-year-old came to Linz ten years ago. “I come from a very traditional family. I missed our food here and I thought: Why is this not available here?” A question Matula no longer has to ask himself. “Papu” is an affectionate term for food in Poland, a child’s term.

The food bar is decorated with funny details, and Matula herself wears a dress that resembles the traditional costume of the country. The best sellers are on the table of course Pierogi, the different filled dumplings that are served with sour cream. Both with mushrooms and those with potatoes taste very mild.

“Many people come because they have eaten pierogi in Poland and are happy that they are now available here,” says Matula. In the culinary uniform of Wiener Straße, “Papu” is meant to be a small oasis of variety.

Flour Soup & Cabbage Rolls

In addition to pierogi, there is also a classic one sour flour soup with sausage (6.20 Euros), Cabbage rolls (12.50 euros) and Krautfleisch (12.80 euros). And Polish beer. Those with a sweet tooth will love the sweet pierogi filled with curd cheese.

The food and taste is fresh and good, but the price is exciting: 9.90 euros for eight pieces of pierogi. They are proud that the dumplings are served on paper plates and with wooden knives. Just a snack, albeit a very nice one.

Kinga Matula will run her restaurant until the end of the year, “then I will think about what happens next.”
