The papillomavirus (HPV) is responsible, each year, for 30,000 precancerous lesions and more than 8,000 cancers of the genital, anal and oropharyngeal regions, according to the Academy of Medicine. In fact, this type of sexually transmitted infection remains very common, and remains benign in the vast majority of cases. Still, this is the cause of 30% of cancers diagnosed in France. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), these cancers could be avoided thanks to a more effective prevention, vaccination and screening strategy.

Since 2021, in France, vaccination against HPV has been recommended in the vaccination schedule for all children girls and boys between 11 and 14 years old with two doses spaced 6 to 13 months apart. Vaccination can also be offered as a catch-up until the age of 19 and remains possible until the age of 26 for homosexuals. But only 37% of girls and 9% of boys are vaccinated against the virus (while the ten-year cancer control strategy 2021-2030 aims for a target of 80% within seven years).
