Since the outbreak of the epidemic linked to the Delta variant, the Papara firefighters have not stopped intervening in the neighborhoods of the town to provide assistance to people affected by the virus.
“In fact, 90% of our current interventions are linked to covid,” explains Odette Torohia, professional firefighter and guard chief of a team of six people.
“We are running on our normal schedule. Now we are touching wood because for the moment, no one in our teams has been affected by the virus. “
Over the past two weeks, calls directly from families have increased.
“When the private medical practices installed in the town call us”, continues Odette. “We already know what to expect. But, if these calls come directly from families, we are suspicious and we already put on covid outfit, ie with the blue jumpsuit. The people have already seen us in action. It is an appropriate outfit that allows us to intervene in complete safety with people affected by the virus and who will have to be evacuated to the Taaone hospital center because their situation has become critical. “Per day, teams of 6 to 8 people tour the neighborhoods. “It turns and it doesn’t stop,” says Odette. ” It’s very difficult. This week, one of our teams performed 12 operations at the Taaone hospital center. These are days of more than 12 hours of work. It is very trying and exhausting. Now you have to manage the teams. It is important that our guys can also recover and get off to a good start. “
For now, the chief of staff of the Papara rescue center manages to manage the situation. But for how long?
