Papa Bouba Diop died at the age of 42. Ex player Senegal national team known to the world through his goals on goal French of 2002 World Cup.
Diop died in Paris on Sunday (29/11/2020) local time. The Guardian said he had been experiencing prolonged illness.
Meanwhile, L’Équipe wrote that Diop died of Charcot disease, a disease that attacks nerves and makes sufferers feel numb in the joints.
Throughout his career, Diop arguably never defended big teams. His work is only in clubs like Neuchatel Xamax, Grasshopper, Lens, FulhamAPRSWXNET Portsmouth AEK, Portsmouth, AEK West Ham United, and Birmingham City.
Diop’s achievements were not so sparkling. The most memorable achievement was when he surprisingly won the FA Cup with Portsmouth in 2008. While at the national team level, he led Senegal to be runner-up for the 2002 African Cup.
But not because of these two things that made his name worldwide, but because of his goal against Fabian Barthez in Seoul.
Senegal came to the 2002 World Cup as a debutant. Meeting France in the inaugural match of Group A on May 31, 2002, no one expected the Lions to give a surprise, especially when France won the 1998 World Cup and 2000 European Cup.
However, Diop et al managed to silence the public. In the 30th minute, El Hadji Diouf released a cross in front of the French goal. Emmanuel Petit swept the ball away, but instead hit Barthez. Diop not far from there immediately grabbed the unmanned ball into the empty French goal.
After that, France, who relied on Sylvain Wiltord, Thierry Henry and David Trezeguet, tried to retaliate, but Senegal managed to keep its lead until it was over. The win was historic for Senegal, and Diop was part of it.
Senegal finally ended the tournament in the quarter-finals, after losing to Turkey golden goal. Unfortunately for France, they came home early after being eliminated in the group phase without winning and not scoring at all.
