While purple has been back on the runways for a few years now, this color has just been elected color of the year 2022 by Pantone. Every winter, the company plays predictions for the coming year. “The warmest and happiest of blue hues”, Also referred to as “Dynamic periwinkle blue”, is thus a sumptuous purple symbolizing vitality, novelty and reinvention. Nothing was decided at random. Since spring, a team of around twenty people have been studying trends. Fashion, automobiles, coffee capsules… nothing escapes the careful marketing analysis carried out by this company specializing in visual communication. Since the 1960s, the company has been creating color charts for the textile, advertising and graphic design industries and has thus made a name for itself in the field.
According to Pantone, this choice takes into account in particular the explosion in the use of computers over the past two years.. The border between the digital and physical sphere is shrinking at the same time as a term from science fiction such as “metaverse” [monde en ligne virtuel et immersif] inspires the new name (Meta) chosen by Mark Zuckerberg to rename his Facebook group, the digital multinational that he had the brilliant idea to create in 2004. Could this choice be the symptom of a new era? Warning ! Pantone has been wrong in some past years. In 2020, the international firm predicted that a “Classic blue (…), a solid shade you can count on” would be the color of the year … a prediction that makes you smile in retrospect, when you consider that the Covid-19 pandemic turned the world upside down that year. Last year, the international firm had exceptionally opted for two colors: gray and yellow in order to bring a touch of optimism to the complicated year that was then ahead.
