Grotesque “inventory”, energetic tenants and a team of rats – what will you meet in the multi-part movie “Pansija palili”?
Going to see the manor he received as a gift for the first time, Viktors Eglītis with his sons Anšlava and Vidvudus are sure that they will see the most magnificent palace in Europe, an absolute paradise. The reality turns out to be much different. The manor resembles a slum, and in addition, it still houses former servants from the times of the German-Balto baron – quite grotesque characters, called inventory.
The Egliš family is determined to restore the manor and open a guest house there.
The characters and events of the novel “Pansija pili” were brought to life last summer during 50 days of filming at the Padure manor near Kuldīga. Screenwriters Tabita Rudzāte and Ivo Briedis translated the novel into a movie format. Three directors worked on the film: Marta Elīna Martinsone, Dāvis Sīmanis and Andis Mizišs.
“It was such a great joint effort of all of us. We must say a huge thank you to the producers for the wonderful opportunity to work with such a large ensemble of actors, with whom every director rarely has to work on a daily basis, and with such excellent actors – legends, for whom there is also a natural awe, regardless of how big or small is your experience as a director,” Andis Mizišs said.
Dace Evers, Lāsma Kugrēna, Juris Strenga, Jānis Jarāns and Kaspars Znotiņš reveal the colorful characters of the former servants of the manor in the film, Viktor Eglīti is played by Gundars Āboliņš, and Anšlava Eglīti by Rihards Zelezņevs. The main tool in his work on the role was Ieva Struka’s monograph on Anšlava Eglīti, besides which he also started writing himself. The actor says: “What did I do myself? I wrote a lot. At the moment when I found out that I would have the opportunity to play Anslava Egliti, I thought about how I could get some kind of intellectual capacity, and I wrote, wrote, wrote all the time . I wrote down all kinds of thoughts, wrote a diary in the morning and at night. I think it helped me a lot.”
A much larger space than in the novel is allocated to the Liepiņi couple, played by Gunas Zariņa and Viļas Udņiņas, the tenants of the manor – they do not miss any opportunity to earn money and develop their care amazingly creatively.
“I really liked this script proposal – to be such an energetic tenant who all the time interferes in the sentimental plans of Egliš, because he has completely different – rational plans, how everything should look like here,” says Vilis Daudzins.
“But the palace itself – really wonderful interiors for filming. There – as soon as you enter – the fantasy just explodes, which you couldn’t do so much there!”
The costumes and the visual image of the film are not created as a documentary reality, but as an eclecticism, permeated by the interplay with different styles and details, says the main artist of the film, Kristīne Jurjāne: “I thought it was very exciting that there was an opportunity to create such grotesque types, which are the so-called boarding house inventory – old servants, where you could really put your imagination, combining details of Victorian costumes with modern and 20s, 30s variety.”
We will also see a lot of four-legged actors on the screen – in the first episode, it will be a whole team of rats that will come to get to know the new residents of the manor. “It was agreed that we would build such special tunnels where they go, so that we are sure that they get into the frame and into the foreground of the frame, but it ended up that at first they got lost in the actors’ clothes and the actors’ bags, and then also in the interior of the castle, and we never found some of those rats again, because a hole was still left open,” reveals Kristīne Jurjāne.
The multi-episode film “Pansija pili” will be shown in cinemas from January 22, several episodes will be shown in one screening.
