But in the history of the festival, “Killers of the Flower Moon” does not even end up in the top ten of the record ovations. The industry magazine “Variety” has unraveled the longest standing ovations in Cannes history.
“Pan’s Labyrinth” is the applause record holder
At number one in the applause ranking is “Pan’s Labyrinth”. Guillermo del Toros (58) dark fairy tale was applauded for 2006 for 22 minutes. The story of a little girl who flees into a fantasy world in fascist France in the 1940s thrilled viewers – but the film didn’t win the Palme d’Or. Instead, the main prize of the festival went to “The Wind That Shakes the Barley” by Ken Loach (86).
Second place goes to “Fahrenheit 9/11”. Michael Moore’s (69) reckoning with the Bush administration’s response to the September 11, 2001 attacks ran in 2004 in competition. The committed documentary was honored with a 20-minute applause. At the end of the festival, Moore also won the Palme d’Or.
Michael Moore had already been acclaimed in Cannes two years earlier. “Bowling for Columbine,” about America’s gun craze, received a standing ovation for 13 minutes.
Matthew McConaughey with two films in the top five
The first film with a superstar is in third place. “Mud” starring Matthew McConaughey received 18 minutes of applause in 2012. The adventure drama by Jeff Nichols (44, “Take Shelter”) revived the Hollywood star’s career. But there was no prize in Cannes.
“Neon Demon” by Nicolas Winding Refn (52) follows in fourth place. The thriller starring Elle Fanning, 25, was met with mixed reviews from critics, but garnered a 17-minute ovation and a few boos when it premiered.
Two films, each 15 minutes long, share fifth place. The Lebanese film “Capernaum – City of Hope” not only received the most applause in 2018, but also the Jury Prize.
“The Paperboy” also earned a quarter of an hour of fame with Matthew McConaughey, who appeared in the top five for the second time. The flashy crime thriller starring Nicole Kidman (55) was the most controversial film in the competition in 2012. Some boos mingled with the applause.
