Departing from Vieux-Lyon, this walk on the heights of Lyon mixes typical streets, panoramic viewpoints and green areas. A small loop of 4.5 km on the hill of Fourvière which is done in about 1h15, taking the time at each step. And what better than a little urban culture to warm up? Come on, let’s go!
STEP 1: ZOO ART SHOW IN OLD LYON
To begin with, I really like this view from the footbridge of the Courthouse. With the colorful facades of Vieux-Lyon and Fourvière on one side, Croix-Rousse and the peninsula on the other. A nice starting point before taking the height. But first, I invite you to walk past Food Traboule. Here in normal times, it is the effervescence. A real beehive with a thousand smells.
So not to forget it during the health crisis, 8 artists from the Zoo Art Show have just revived the entrance to this foodcourt that I love so much. An ephemeral initiative that follows the same development dynamic as the operation Appetizers. My favorite work? This tribute to Jean-Michel Basquiat made by Bess, with brush, acrylic paint and Posca.
STAGE 2: BELVEDERE AT L’ANTIQUAILLE
From there, take the Montée des Chazeaux towards Fourvière. At the top of the stairs, take a few steps to the right to enjoy a bird’s eye view of Lyon. That of the Villa Florentine. Then continue towards St Just by Montée St Barthélémy. You arrive in the Antiquaille district.
At the foot of the gourmet restaurant Têtedoie, the belvedere of Cardinal Henri de Lubac is undoubtedly one of my favorite points of view of Lyon. Especially since it is less frequented than that of Fourvière. Have you seen this house with its watchtower? From the inside, you must have the impression of having the city to yourself.
STEP 3: HISTORY AT THE GALLO-ROMAN THEATER
Then take the stairs to reach the Gallo-Roman Theater. On this ancient site animated by the Nuits de Fourvière in summer, pay attention to what you say, the acoustics are excellent. Climb up the stands and go to the top of the ruins to enjoy the spectacle. Here you will have a beautiful view of the peninsula, the Part-Dieu and the Basilica of Fourvière. And when the museums reopen, you can stop at the Musee Lyons.
STEP 4: ESSENTIAL VIEW IN FOURVIÈRE
And now the route continues rue Roger Radisson to the Basilica of Fourvière. On the adjoining esplanade, the panoramic view over Lyon is an essential stopping point. No need to wait for passing friends to admire this unique view, where you can see Mont Blanc on a clear day. Take your time to observe every detail of Lyon at your feet, around a take-away coffee at Café Pignol located on the square.
STAGE 5: PANORAMA HANGING ON THE FOUR VENTS PASSERELLE
Then going towards the metal tower, turn left onto Chemin du Viaduc. A few steps further, you are on the footbridge of the four winds. A suspended wooden passage, which offers very beautiful views on the Saône below, the Monts d’Or in the distance and the religious gardens on the other side. The opportunity also to see the basilica of Fourvière, from another point of view.
STAGE 6: AIR FROM ITALY ON THE SARRA RUNWAY
And from here, the walk continues on the Sarra trail. Former artificial ski slope in the 1960s and 1970s, today it is a mountain bike trail and a tree climbing course. Going down this slope among the trees, the landscape takes on the air of Italy. It was the cypresses and the colorful houses that gave me this impression. In the rue de Montauban below, quiet place in the middle of nice houses.
STAGE 7: END OF THE LOOP ON THE QUAIS DE SAÔNE
To conclude this walk on the hill of Fourvière, 2 solutions to reach the quays of the Saône. Either by the rise of Chana to arrive in front of Subsistances. Either by continuing in the rue de Montauban, to arrive at the level of St Paul. The first option definitely makes you want to go back to Italy (this house evokes the colors of Burano, with a little imagination) and going up the quays of the Saône gives you desire for boats.
While the 2nd option gives a another point of view over Lyon, with Part-Dieu in the background. Before arriving at St Paul station in Vieux-Lyon. In both cases, the day’s walk stops at the Feuillée bridge, with this beautiful view of the Quai St Vincent and the Croix-Rousse.
So, did you like this stroll in the 5th? If you’re running out of ideas for the next ones, here’s some inspiration. See you in the tropics in the large greenhouses of the park of the golden head, discover the unusual garden Rosa Mir, embark on a pixel hunt or discover the street artists on the slopes of Croix-Rousse. Have a good walk in the streets of Lyon!
