Pankow Street History: Newsletter 3/4 2023 from Friends of the Chronik Pankow Published

Just in time for the end of the year, newsletter 3/4 2023 from the Friends of the Chronik Pankow e.V. was published. V. Also there: French Buchholz and Guyotstrasse. With twenty-six articles on Pankow street names, local history can be read up close. The nine authors are members of the circle of friends. As a guest, Ms. Diehm-Hadlich kindly provided the text on Hadlichstrasse from the estate of her grandfather, Prof. Dr. Trendelenburg available. Thanks to the editorial team led by Hannelore Sigbjörnsen.

The focus is on Niederschönhausen and Alt-Pankow. One article describes the history of Hielscherstrasse in Wilhelmsruh (Harald Bröer) and for French Buchholz I described the numerous Buchholz families with the name GUYOT. Guyotstrasse in French Buchholz is named after them, where today the final stop of TRAM 50 (which runs to Virchow Clinic) is located along Rosenthaler Weg.

Each contribution is an exciting piece of the mosaic in the large Pankow street network, which is reflected in the accumulation and combination of such different streets as Beuthstrasse (Heidemarie Fritzsching), Brehmestrasse (Hannelore Sigbjörnsen), Görschstrasse (Hans KLockmann), Gaillardstrasse ( Patrick Otto), Herthaplatz (Frank Schröder), Pfarrer-Jungklaus-Straße (Werner Mach), Skladanowskystraße (Hannelore Sigbjörnsen), Pfarrer-Lenzel-Straße (Jutta Mach) and Schulzestraße (Heidemarie Fritzsching) are a living reflection of the History of Pankow emerges.

The preliminary remark reads: “The history of street names shows that in different historical periods there were certain defining patterns after which streets were named. The first names for streets arose between the 11th and 13th centuries, i.e. in the Middle Ages. … The economic development of Pankow, then still a suburb of Berlin, took place parallel to that of the imperial capital in the second half of the 19th century. The names of a whole series of personalities are associated with this in our hometown.”

It has become an informative, richly illustrated booklet for the end of 2023, costs 7 euros and inquiries to the club can be made by email to [email protected] or online.

It’s certainly not just history buffs who are curious and want to read more closely. Some of the magazines became Christmas presents for me. It can be viewed in the local chronicle ofFrench Buchholz by telephone appointment.
